01 / THE EVERYDAY FORMATS

What is Standard Paper Size?

A4 and Letter are the two common everyday office formats. A4 paper size is 210 × 297 millimeters (mm), 21 × 29.7 centimeters (cm), or approximately 8.27 × 11.69 inches. Letter paper size is exactly 8.5 × 11 inches, or 215.9 × 279.4 mm.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) defines A-series and B-series trimmed paper sizes inISO 216. North American formats include Letter, Legal and Tabloid. A standard sheet size describes the sheet edges; the printable area depends on the printer’s margins and borderless capabilities.

Use the format that matches the document and the destination printer. A4 and Letter are close in size, but they are not interchangeable at 100% print scale. Paper size conversion between the two requires a magnification adjustment: scale A4 to 94% for Letter, or Letter to 97% for A4.

Are UK paper sizes different to US paper sizes?

Yes. The United Kingdom (UK) commonly uses A4; the United States (US) commonly uses Letter. A4 is 5.9 mm narrower and 17.6 mm taller than Letter. Legal paper size is 8.5 × 14 inches (215.9 × 355.6 mm), giving a longer sheet for documents that need extra vertical space.

Traditional North American Paper Sizes

Letter, Legal and Tabloid are common North American paper sizes. Letter suits everyday correspondence, Legal provides a longer page, and Tabloid measures 11 × 17 inches for larger layouts. Ledger uses the same 17 × 11-inch sheet in landscape orientation.

Statement is 5.5 × 8.5 inches; Executive is 7.25 × 10.5 inches. A printer’s Folio option often means 8.5 × 13 inches, but “Folio” has other regional meanings. Match the dimensions, not just the printing paper size name.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) are associated withANSI/ASME Y14.1 drawing sheet formats. Do not assume every North American office format belongs to the ANSI A–E drawing series.

What Size Paper Do Printers Use?

Most home and office inkjet and laser printers accept 2 standard sizes — A4 and Letter — while other paper size options depend on the model and feed tray. Legal, A5, A6, envelopes and photo sheets require supported paper size settings in the printer driver. A3 and Tabloid need a printer with a sufficiently wide paper path; A2 usually needs a large-format device.

Set the document page size, load the intended sheet, and select the same paper size in the printer driver and tray settings. A printer paper size error occurs when these three settings do not match. Correct the error by checking the document size, adjusting the paper guides to the exact paper size loaded, and confirming that the selected tray supports the sheet. Verify the printer paper exact size against your sheet's printed dimensions, not just the size name — regional variants such as Folio can differ.Manufacturer media specificationslist supported sizes and types for each model.

A0 through A10 give 11 familiar steps in the A series. Each step halves the previous sheet’s nominal area. A3 is about twice the area of A4; A5 is about half the area of A4. The long-to-short edge ratio stays close to √2, with whole-millimeter rounding.

Paper Size Chart / Guide

This paper size chart lists common sheet dimensions in millimeters, centimeters and inches. Measurements are width × height in the orientation shown. Metric ISO sizes use nominal whole-millimeter dimensions; inch conversions are rounded for display. One inch equals exactly 25.4 mm.

How many different sizes are there?

There is no single worldwide total: paper formats include international series, regional sizes, envelopes, photo sheets and custom dimensions. This directory contains257size entries across22categories; entries can share dimensions or names. That is a directory count, not a count of unique standardized sheets.

A-series formats serve documents and print layouts. B-series formats provide intermediate sizes; C-series envelopes accommodate related document formats. North American, photographic and regional paper size options serve different jobs. Browse a family to find the exact name and measurement.

What are the Different Types of Paper?

There are 7 common printer paper types: plain copy paper, bond, recycled paper, matte coated paper, glossy photo paper, cardstock, and labels or envelopes. Sheet size, surface finish and paper weight are 3 separate choices: an A4 sheet can be plain office paper or photo paper in different weights.

Grams per square meter (gsm) measures paper weight as mass per area, not paper thickness. Two sheets with the same gsm can have different thickness, stiffness and coating. Match both the media type and weight to the printer specifications; a paper size selection alone does not establish compatibility.
