DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE

What Does Your Result Mean?

Inspect your printed test sheet against the diagnostic symptoms below to identify printhead, toner, alignment, or feed irregularities.

Color Issue

Missing or Faded Color

One or more primary patches (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, or Black) are absent or faint.

Likely cause: A depleted ink cartridge, dried nozzle channel, or empty toner reservoir. Run a printhead cleaning cycle or check cartridge levels.
Banding

Horizontal or Vertical Banding

Repeating white or dark lines running across solid color blocks or gradient ramps.

Likely cause: Partially clogged printhead nozzles, paper feed roller slippage, or print quality set to "Draft". Try high-quality mode and head cleaning.
Broken Lines

Broken or Missing Fine Lines

Stair-step nozzle ladders or fine test grid lines appear fragmented or discontinuous.

Likely cause: Dried ink on specific inkjet nozzle orifices. Perform a nozzle check utility in your printer's software driver.
Skew / Feed

Shifted Grid or Skewed Lines

Grid lines are tilted, diagonal lines do not meet corner marks, or crosshairs appear skewed.

Likely cause: Paper tray guides are loose, feed rollers are uneven, or printhead alignment needs recalibration through printer settings.
Margin Cutoff

Clipped Outer Borders

The 5 mm or 10 mm inset margin borders are cut off at one or more paper edges.

Likely cause: The printer's mechanical feed rollers have a hardware minimum margin, or the document was printed with "Fit to Page" enabled.
Density

Weak, Gray, or Mottled Black

The 100% black reference block appears light gray, washed out, or unevenly covered.

Likely cause: Low black toner, draft mode enabled, or incorrect paper type selected (e.g. plain paper setting when using thick cardstock).

What Is a Printer Test Page?

A printer test page is a precision diagnostic document designed to evaluate the physical output of an inkjet or laser printer. Unlike a standard text document or photo, a test sheet contains purpose-built target patterns: pure primary color swatches, stepped grayscale ramps, millimeter alignment grids, micro-line ladders, and edge rulers.

Printing a diagnostic sheet helps you isolate whether an issue originates in hardware (such as clogged nozzles, worn drum units, or feed roller slippage) or software settings (such as driver color profiles, scaling distortion, or incorrect paper dimensions).

Choosing the Right Diagnostic Test

Different print issues require different diagnostic patterns. Select the test mode above that matches your troubleshooting goal:

  • Universal Test: The recommended all-in-one sheet. Combines CMYK solid swatches, secondary RGB samples, 10-step grayscale, text resolution ladders, alignment crosshairs, and a calibrated 100 mm reference ruler. Ideal for initial printer setup or routine health checks.
  • Color / CMYK Mode: Provides individual Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (Black) channel blocks with 20% to 100% tint steps, smooth gradients, and neutral gray references. Used to identify color cast, ink starvation, and channel mixing errors.
  • Black & White Mode: Dedicated monochrome test featuring a 100% black density block, 11-step grayscale ramp, text sharpness samples from 4pt to 24pt, and inverse white-on-black typography. Perfect for office laser printers and monochrome documents.
  • Alignment / Grid Mode: Precision metric grid with center and corner registration crosshairs, corner-to-corner diagonals, and edge rulers. Detects paper feed skew, printhead carriage timing errors, and aspect ratio stretching.
  • Printable Area / Margin Mode: Displays 5 mm, 10 mm, 15 mm, and 20 mm nested inset borders with millimeter edge scales running to the sheet edge. Helps you measure the exact mechanical non-printable margin of your printer model.
  • Inkjet Fine-Line / Nozzle Diagnostic: High-frequency fine-line ladders for each ink channel to detect blocked nozzles and micro-banding before starting large print jobs.

How to Print Correctly at 100% Actual Size

For diagnostic patterns—especially alignment grids and printable area rulers—to be physically accurate, your print dialog must be configured correctly:

  1. Match Paper Size: Ensure your printer driver is set to the same physical size loaded in the tray (A4, US Letter, or US Legal). Mismatched paper sizes cause automatic driver scaling.
  2. Set Scale to 100% (Actual Size): In your browser or PDF reader print settings, disable "Fit to Page", "Fit to Printable Area", or "Shrink oversized pages". Select "Actual Size" or 100%.
  3. Verify Scaling with a Physical Ruler: The Universal and Margin test pages include a calibrated 100 mm scale. Place a physical ruler against the printed line: it should measure exactly 100 mm (10 cm). If it measures shorter or longer, page scaling was applied.
  4. Select Correct Paper Type: If printing on cardstock, photo paper, or labels, adjust the media type setting in your printer properties to ensure appropriate toner fusing temperature or ink volume.

Printer Test Page FAQ

How do I print a test page at actual size without scaling distortion?
In your browser or system print dialog, open More Settings. Set Scale to 100% or "Actual Size", and verify that "Fit to Printable Area" or "Shrink to Fit" is turned off. Set the paper size to match your sheet (e.g. A4 or Letter).
Why does my printed test page look faded or have missing colors?
Missing or faded color blocks usually indicate an empty cartridge, depleted toner, or dried ink clogging the printhead nozzles. Check ink levels and run your printer's automated head-cleaning utility.
What causes horizontal lines or banding across color swatches?
Banding is most commonly caused by partially clogged inkjet nozzles, incorrect print quality settings (e.g. Draft instead of Normal/High), or misalignment between printhead passes.
Why are the outer border lines cut off on my printout?
Most standard office printers have a physical non-printable margin of 3 mm to 6 mm where the paper feed rollers grip the sheet. Use the Printable Area / Margin mode above to see your printer's exact hardware cutoff boundary.
Can I download the test page as a PDF file?
Yes. Click the "Download PDF" button to generate a clean, vector-dimensioned PDF calibrated to your exact selected paper format with zero tracking and no external software required.
