Letter vs Legal: check the longer edge
Avoid trimming a Legal document when printing on Letter.

US Letter measures 8.5 × 11 inches. US Legal measures 8.5 × 14 inches. They share a width, but Legal is three inches longer.
When the paper does not match
Printing a Legal document at original size on Letter can clip the bottom of the page. Scaling can fit it onto the shorter sheet, but makes the content smaller. A paper tray may also need to be adjusted to accept Legal sheets.
