Thermal Printer Resolution Explained
Thermal printers use a fixed-width print head with a specific dot density.The three common resolutions are 203 DPI, 300 DPI, and 600 DPI. Each dot corresponds to one heated element on the print head.
When configuring a thermal printer, you often need to enter label dimensions indots rather than millimeters or inches. The conversion is:dots = (mm ÷ 25.4) × DPI.
203 DPI vs 300 DPI
203 DPI is the most common thermal printer resolution. It produces clear barcodes and readable text at standard label sizes. 300 DPI offers approximately 48% higher resolution, resulting in sharper small text and more detailed graphics. For standard shipping labels and product barcodes, 203 DPI is sufficient.
Common Label Sizes in Dots
At 203 DPI: A 4 × 6 inch label is 812 × 1,218 dots. A 4 × 2 inch label is 812 × 406 dots. At 300 DPI: A 4 × 6 inch label is 1,200 × 1,800 dots. Always match the dot count to your printer's actual resolution.
