Understanding DPI, PPI and Image Resolution
DPI (dots per inch) measures how many ink dots a printer places per linear inch.PPI (pixels per inch) describes the pixel density of a digital image. In practice, the terms are often used interchangeably when discussing print resolution.
Pixel dimensions are the width and height of your image file in pixels.Physical dimensions are the width and height of the printed output in mm or inches. DPI connects the two: DPI = pixels ÷ inches.
DPI Quality Thresholds
- Below 150 DPI — Low quality. Individual pixels may be visible, especially in text and fine lines. Suitable only for large-format prints viewed from a distance.
- 150–299 DPI — Acceptable for most documents, flyers, and internal prints. Detail may appear slightly soft at close inspection.
- 300 DPI — The industry standard for high-quality commercial printing and photography. Most desktop printers produce excellent results at this resolution.
- 600+ DPI — Maximum sharpness for fine art reproductions, detailed technical drawings, and high-end pre-press work.
How to Check Your Image Before Printing
Open your image in any editor and note the pixel dimensions. Then use the "Find DPI" mode above: enter the pixel dimensions and the paper size you plan to print on. If the resulting DPI is 300 or higher, your image is ready for high-quality printing on that size.
If the DPI is lower than desired, you have two options: print at a smaller physical size (which increases the effective DPI), or accept the lower resolution. Upscaling the image in software does not add real detail.
