Understanding DPI, PPI and Image Resolution

DPI (dots per inch) measures how many ink dots a printer places per linear inch.PPI (pixels per inch) describes the pixel density of a digital image. In practice, the terms are often used interchangeably when discussing print resolution.

Pixel dimensions are the width and height of your image file in pixels.Physical dimensions are the width and height of the printed output in mm or inches. DPI connects the two: DPI = pixels ÷ inches.

DPI Quality Thresholds

  • Below 150 DPI — Low quality. Individual pixels may be visible, especially in text and fine lines. Suitable only for large-format prints viewed from a distance.
  • 150–299 DPI — Acceptable for most documents, flyers, and internal prints. Detail may appear slightly soft at close inspection.
  • 300 DPI — The industry standard for high-quality commercial printing and photography. Most desktop printers produce excellent results at this resolution.
  • 600+ DPI — Maximum sharpness for fine art reproductions, detailed technical drawings, and high-end pre-press work.

How to Check Your Image Before Printing

Open your image in any editor and note the pixel dimensions. Then use the "Find DPI" mode above: enter the pixel dimensions and the paper size you plan to print on. If the resulting DPI is 300 or higher, your image is ready for high-quality printing on that size.

If the DPI is lower than desired, you have two options: print at a smaller physical size (which increases the effective DPI), or accept the lower resolution. Upscaling the image in software does not add real detail.

Is my image resolution high enough to print?
Use the "Find DPI" mode above: enter your image pixel dimensions and the intended print size. If the resulting DPI is 300 or above, the image is high quality for print. Between 150–299 DPI is acceptable for most documents. Below 150 DPI will look pixelated.
What DPI will my image print at?
DPI equals the pixel count divided by the print dimension in inches. A 3,000 × 4,000 pixel image printed on A4 (8.27 × 11.69 in) produces approximately 363 × 342 DPI — well above the 300 DPI threshold.
What image resolution do I need for A4?
For 300 DPI on A4 (210 × 297 mm), you need at least 2,480 × 3,508 pixels. For 150 DPI, 1,240 × 1,754 pixels is sufficient. Use the "Find Required Pixels" mode above.
Can I print this image at 300 DPI?
Divide your image width in pixels by 300 to find the maximum print width in inches. For example, a 4,000 pixel wide image can print up to 13.3 inches wide at 300 DPI.
How large can I print my image without losing quality?
Use the "Find Print Size" mode: enter your pixel dimensions and desired DPI. The tool calculates the maximum physical dimensions while maintaining that quality level.
Is 150 DPI enough for printing?
150 DPI is acceptable for documents, flyers, and posters viewed from a normal reading distance. For photographs, sharp text, or professional print work, 300 DPI is recommended.
